Baradene and Epsom Girls’ split finals victories

Auckland’s Secondary Schoolgirls’ Finals ended up with Baradene College and Epsom Girls’ Grammar School splitting victories – Baradene took out the Auckland Championship while EGGS won the Gillette Venus Regional title.

In the first final between the two schools; Baradene won the toss and put EGGS in to bat. EGGS initially started well, reaching 30 without loss.

However, when openers Annie Ewart and Gemma Adams were dismissed within three balls, things started to go downhill. Petra Beuvink took two wickets in her over and EGGS was suddenly at 30/3.

They reached 50/4 before the next four wickets fell for just six runs. Elizabeth Buchanan held out, but when Molly Penfold bowled her out, Baradene had wrapped up EGGS for 69 runs. All the bowlers picked up wickets, Issy Gerrard particularly was impressive, taking 2-7.

Baradene made a quick start to their chase, putting on 18 runs inside three overs before losing a wicket.

Ella Farrell and Fran Jonas marshalled most of the chase, and when EGGS did break the partnership, it was too late. Farrell top-scored with 25 not out, and Baradene picked up a six-wicket win and the Auckland championship.

In the Gillette Venus Cup final, EGGS managed to turn the previous day’s loss on its head, after they defeated Mount Albert Grammar School to join Baradene in the final.

Eggs sent Baradene in to bat, and Breearne Illing had immediate success, taking two wickets in the first over.

Baradene attempted to recover from this, with captain Lexy Bassett leading the way. However, when she became Illing’s fourth wicket for 23, Baradene were definitely in trouble.

Illing finished four overs with figures of 4-4. Ede Rogan, Phoebe Jones, and Gemma Adams all took two wickets each.

This impressive bowling display meant that other than Bassett, none of the Baradene players could get a foothold. The side was all out for 64 in the 16th over.

Baradene needed to make early breakthroughs to put pressure on the opposition. However, the EGGS openers Adams and Ewart both played a smart innings. They had plenty of balls to make the runs from, and were able to be selective about the runs they took.

Adams was run out on 16, with most of the needed runs on the board. Amie Hucker came in to see the end of the chase. Ewart finished on 20 not out, and EGGS won the Gillette Venus Regional title by nine wickets.
