Resuming on 37/2, Auckland University made the most of good conditions for batting with some big scores from their middle and lower order on the way to 454. Star batter Oyishik Chakraborty tonned up (130) with half centuries to Josh Olliver (81 off 62) and Barrington Rowland (77) and some other aggressive contributions. This was enough to surpass Eden Roskill’s 346 and grab some first innings points for the round. On Roskill’s part, Jeet Kumar picked up a big bag of wickets with 7/154.

Parnell dominated day two of their clash against Cornwall at Cornwall Park on Saturday. Resuming over the week trailing Parnell by 296 runs, Cornwall fell to 134 all out. Jamie Hayes was the pick of the batters with 32 while the wickets were shared between the Parnell bowlers with Harry Cullen-Hieatt’s 3/8 off 8 being the standout. Forced to bat again in their second dig, the home team fared better with half centuries to Dimithri Gallage (64) and Sid Dixit (53). They finished the day on 191/5, Parnell taking first innings points.

North Shore roared back into form this weekend with a stomping win over Suburbs New Lynn at Ken Maunder Park. Shore, who had a tough start to the season, dominated last week by having Suburbs New Lynn trailing by 104 runs with just one wicket in hand. They carried on this domination by quickly bowling Suburbs out then bashing a quick 156/4 before delaring their second innings. Adi Dhadwal was particularly savage with his 52 off 22 including 7 sixes. Needing 255 to win, Suburbs fell short at 183. Will Clarke was the destroyer for North Shore this time with 7/64 off 18.5, giving his side their first outright victory of the season.

East Coast Bays received their first two day defeat of the season with home team Taka taking first innings points at Onewa Domain. Taka carried on batting on day two with Cameron Neal reaching 155 and Ross ter Braak 60 before they declared their innings at 433/6 off 78 overs. Despite Michael Ross’ fantastic 113 Bays fell short at 245 and were sent back in to bat. Matt Jones with 5/62 was the pick of the Taka bowlers. Bays then reached 97/4 off 16 overs before the close of play, Luke Watson (46* off 53) the top scorer. ECB are still top of the table though Parnell and Auckland University are now hot on their heels.

Hibiscus Coast 221 (62.3) & 212 (51.2) beat Birkenhead 199 (60.4) & 106/6 (14.5) on first innings
Birkenhead War Memorial Park
Shifting to the Tom Hellaby, Hibiscus took first innings honours in a hard fought north-of-the-bridge derby at Birkenhead War Memorial Park. Resuming on 106/6 over the week, Birkenhead fell 22 runs short of Hibiscus Coast’s 221 in their first dig, James O’Brien’s 76 the standout. Tony Treadaway was the pick of the Hibiscus bowlers with 5/42. Batting again to set up a fourth innings chase, Hibiscus were bowled out for 212, setting Birkenhead a target of 235. They reached stumps on 106/6, which is coincidentally the same score they reached at stumps on on day one! This time Birkenhead were clearly gunning for the target with their aggressive approach taking them just 14.5 overs. However, Hibiscus bagged first innings points and remain at 6th spot on the table, just behind Waitakere.

Grafton consolidated their position at the top of the Tom Hellaby table with another firm outright win, this time against Kumeu at Huapai Domain. Kumeu resumed their second innings on 12/0, still trailing by 23 runs and were eventually bowled out for 209, with number eight batter Kabir Shingala cracking 55 off 53. Fraser Campbell was the pick of the Grafton bowlers with 4/31. Chasing 175, Grafton got over the line in 37 overs, highlighted by star batter Sineth Gunawardene’s 66* off 75.

At Papatoetoe Rec Ground, both Howick Pakuranga and Papatoetoe enjoyed a good day of batting which saw two 300+ scores, though first innings honours eventually went to the visitors. Resuming at a good position of 110/1 overnight, Howick Pakuranga lifted themselves to 338/6 thanks to half centuries (all between 50 and 59 runs) to each of the top five batters. Four more runs to number six David Winn (46*) and it would have been all top six batters! Facing a deficit of 107 runs, Papatoetoe applied themselves well in their second dig, reaching 319/9 before the close of play, avoiding an outright defeat. Prabjyot Rehal’s 102 and Herschelle Hendricks’ 99 off 69 stood out for the home side.

At Michaels Ave Reserve, Ellerslie took first innings points against Waitakere to remain at third place, within touching distance of the top two teams. In a slightly dicey position of 63/3 after day one, Ellerslie rode on the back of a sensational innings from Dinesh Kharel, who came within one shot of a double ton with his 196 off 263. Next to his epic innings, the next highest score was 28. Batting again with a 115 run deficit, Waitekere fought hard to 125/5 at stumps, preventing an outright loss.

Howick Pakuranga 90/6 (27.2) beat Takapuna 89 (25.1) by 4 wickets

Our female premier teams transitioned back into the Prichard Cup this season with the 10th round of the 40 over competition. Electing to bowl first after winning the toss, Howick Pakuranga made quick and early inroads into the Taka batters and eventually rolled them for 89 in the 26th over. Young Ayaan Lambat helped herself to a superb five wicket bag, ending with 5/26 off 5.1 overs. Despite losing some early wickets, Howick Pak got home in the 28th over thanks to 33 off 22 from Skye Bowden. Both teams now sit at 18 points on the table alongside Parnell with only net run rate separating them.

Cornwall Park
In a hard fought game that went the distance at Cornwall Park, the home side’s 199/6 proved enough to secure a 28-run win against Parnell. Batting first after being sent in, Cornwall’s innings was set up by 57 from Darcy Rose Prasad, 44* from Simi Bajaj and 41 from Bella Armstrong. Madison Curran was the pick of the bowlers for Parnell with 2/22 off her six overs. Parnell struggled in reply despite some decent starts from the top order. Only an unbeaten 39-run partnership for the 9th wickets got them within touching distance with number nine batter Christelle McGuire the standout with 33*.

At Melville Park we witnessed the first match of a new composite team in the competition with Parnell and Papatoetoe joining forces. On the park it was one way traffic however with Suburbs New Lynn completing a stomping 8 wicket win in the end. Batting first after winning the toss, Papatoetoe put 125/9 on the board with Kate Duffield’s 35* the top score. Suburbs had no issue chasing the target down, reaching 127/2 after 25 overs with Jolien van Vliet the pick of the batters.

At their home ground, Auckland University consolidated their position at the top of the Prichard Cup table with a 6 wicket win over Kumeu/North Shore that wasn’t without its hickups! Batting first after losing the toss, K/NS started well by getting to 57/1 but fell away through the middle with Kate Linnell’s 5/6 off just 2.1 overs doing a great deal of damage. Stephanie Carr’s 37 off 46 was the highlight for the visitors. Uni lost a few top order wickets in reply but a series of partnerships led by Emily Handyside (34* off 45) saw them home in the 23rd over.
