Club Cricket 25th November 2023
All of our Premier Club teams managed to get out on the park this weekend with our CityGuard Security Premier Men playing 50-over matches after last weekend’s washouts. Let’s see how they got along.
Hedley Howarth Two-Day Competition – Round Three
Suburbs New Lynn 250/7 (Tejas Patel 103) beat Eden Roskill 140/9 (Sam Devereaux 5/18) by 110 runs
KEN MAUNDER PARK | At their home ground, Suburbs warmed up for the one day formats with a massive win over Eden Roskill. Winning the toss and electing to bat in sunny, breezy conditions, Suburbs racked up a handy 250/7 with opener Tejas Patel standing firm as the rock of the innings. Patel was eventually dismissed for 103, with the lower middle order lifting ‘burbs to a decent total. In reply Eden Roskill never really got going. Sam Devereaux tore through their middle order and despite some late hitting from Harjot Johal and Daman Bhatti, Eden Roskill fell 110 runs short. The win wasn’t quite enough to lift SNLCC above Eden Roskill on the table but they’ll take great confidence into the one-day competition starting next weekend.
SCORECARD
Parnell 137/2 (Harry Miller 61*) beat North Shore 135 by 8 wickets
SHORE ROAD RESERVE | At Shore Road Reserve, Parnell continued their winning ways with a savage takedown of the defending champions. Electing to bowl first at their home ground, Parnell enjoyed a great start thanks to seamer Jack Dymond, who ripped through the Shore top order, leaving them reeling at 29/3. Shore’s middle order rallied but Parnell found a way through and a further lower order collapse saw them stumble to 135 off 34.4 overs. Looking for a miracle from their bowlers, Shore found an early inroad when William Ormiston fell cheaply to Rory Bessell but Harry Miller’s 61 saw Parnell through to an 8-wicket win. Shore, who have lost a number of senior players this season, are now scrambling at last on the table.
SCORECARD
Auckland University 352/6 (Angus Olliver 103*, Barrington Rowland 90, Aakash Prasad 58 beat Takapuna 113 (Jeet Patel 6/37) by 239 runs
COLIN MAIDEN PARK | In perhaps the most one-sided Premier Men’s match of the weekend, Auckland University firmly beat Takapuna by 239 runs at their home ground of Colin Maiden Park. Batting first, Uni raced to 143 before losing their first wicket with openers Aakash Prasad and Barrington Rowland hitting 58 and 91 respectively. This created an ideal launching pad for the rest of the batters and allrounder Angus Olliver obliged. Boy, did he oblige! Olliver smash 103* off just 48 balls to lift AUCC to 352/6. This was way too much for Taka, who never fired a shot in response, collapsing to 113 in 32.2 overs. Jeet Patel was easily the pick of the bowlers with 6/37. Auckland University and Takapuna now sit at 3rd and 4th on the table, respectively, but University are now looking very dangerous for the season ahead.
SCORECARD
East Coast Bays 230 (Campbell Knowles 51, Liam Wheeler 4/38) beat Cornwall 167 (Phil Mecredy 6/34) by 63 runs.
CORNWALL PARK | East Coast Bays once again demonstrated why they’re the form team in this year’s Hedley Howarth competition with a firm win over Cornwall away from home. Electing to bowl first at Cornwall Park, Cornwall got off to a great start by removing three of Bays’ best batters with Samrath Singh and Liam Wheeler doing the damage up top. ECB’s middle and lower order rallied to lift them to 230 with Campbell Knowles top-scoring with 51. Wheeler and Singh ended with 4/38 and 3/47 respectively as Cornwall grabbed all 10 wickets. Cornwall must have fancied their chances of gunning down a gettable total but the Bays bowlers, warhorse Phil Mecredy in particular, proved far too good for and they were bundled out for 167, 64 runs shy of their target. Mecredy’s consistent left-arm inswing bagged him 6/34. Bays stay at the top of the table with Cornwall now at 5th place.
SCORECARD
Tom Hellaby Two-Day Competition – Round Three
Howick Pakuranga 273/9 (Andrew Morrison 90, David Winn 58, Ramesh Lakmal 4/37) beat Hibiscus Coast 220 (Umesh Ranaraja 61, Tony Treadaway 55, Kimesh 4/28) by 53 runs
LLOYD ELSMORE PARK | Meanwhile, the Tom Hellaby competition marches on with Howick Pakuranga continuing their successful season with a solid win over Hibiscus Coast. Batting first after being sent in at Lloyd Elsmore, HowPak managed 273/9 thanks to Andrew Morrison’s 90, David Winn’s 58 and Azharudin Lambat’s aggressive 48. Hibiscus made a decent fist of the chase despite finding themselves at 117/5 but didn’t have the partnerships to get over the line, falling short by 53 runs in the end. Kimesh Chetty was the pick of the bowlers for HPCC with 4/28.
SCORECARD
Ellerslie 241 beat Kumeu 196 (Soliman Jaan 58, Harsh Patel 5/46) by 45 runs
MICHAELS AVE RESERVE | At Michaels Ave, Kumeu continued their difficult start to the season with a 45-run loss to home side Ellerslie. Winning the toss and electing to bowl, Kumeu made regular breakthroughs in the Ellerslie batting order, who scrapped to 241 thanks to a brace of 40s from their top and middle order. Wickets were shared with Kiran Ahir providing the most value with a miserly 2/31. Kumeu weren’t able to build enough consistent partnerships in response with only Soliman Jaan’s 58 and Elyaas Sayed’s 43 giving them any momentum. They fell for 196, 45 runs short. Harsh Patel was the pick of the Ellerslie bowlers with 5/46.
SCORECARD
Grafton 268 (Sineth Gunawardene 88) beat Waitakere 108 (Nikheil Bhana 6/13) by 160 runs
TE ATATU PARK | At Te Atatu Park, Grafton entrenched themselves at the top of the table with a demolition of Waitakere. Winning the toss and batting first, Grafton’s top order fired to lift them to 268. Veteran Gunawardene was the pick of the batters, masterfully shepherding the lower middle order and tail to be last man dismissed for 88. The second half of the match was a one-man show with Nikheil Bhana ripping through Waitakere on his way to 6/13, the best ever one-day bowling figures for a Grafton Prems player. This included a hat-trick to finish off the match, the first for Grafton Prems since 2018. Phew! Waitakere were bundled out for 108 in the end, giving Grafton a 160-run win. All eyes will be on their match-ups this season!
SCORECARD
Birkenhead 277 (Brian Barnard 58, James Newman 52*) beat Papatoetoe 110 by 167 runs
PAPATOETOE REC GROUND | In a similar result at Papatoetoe Rec Ground, Birkenhead’s consistency with bat and ball overpowered the home side as they helped themselves to a 167-run win. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Birkenhead’s innings was built around legendary veteran Brian Barnard’s 58 and James Newman’s aggressive 52, both hit at well over a run a ball. A number of contributions from the rest of the batters helped them post 277 before being bowled out with only one ball to spare. Papatoetoe never found their rhythm in response with Birkenhead’s slower bowlers bowling tightly and striking at regular intervals. They managed just 110 before being bowled out in the 34th over. Birkenhead are now sitting mid-table at 5th while Papatoetoe languish at 8th.
SCORECARD
Prichard Cup Women’s One Day Competition | Round Six
Auckland University 133/4 (Emily Handyside 47*) beat Howick Pakuranga 132 by 6 wickets
COLIN MAIDEN PARK | At Colin Maiden Park, Auckland University women firmly entrenched themselves at the top of the Prichard Cup table with a good win over usual heavyweights Howick Pakuranga. Winning the toss and bowling first, Uni found regular inroads into the HowPak batters with only Emily Child (34), Ayaan Lambat (29) and Holly Lightbourne (22) offering resistance. Wickets were shared with Eli McKenna’s 3/13 the pick as the visitors were dismissed for 132. Despite a couple of early wickets, Uni never really broke a sweat in the chase with Emily Handyside’s aggressive 47* getting the job done for the home side. Six rounds in to the Prichard Cup and Auckland University are yet to lose a game.
SCORECARD
Parnell 247/7 (Rishika Jaswal 59*) beat Kumeu/North Shore 47/9 by 200 runs
DEVONPORT DOMAIN | Another one sided result for our new Kumeu/North Shore team but there were some encouraging signs this week with the K/NS bowlers putting a powerful Parnell side under pressure at the start. Jess Smith, Namra Syed and Rhian Bennett all picked up a couple of wickets and at one point Parnell were struggling on 111/6. Rishika Jaswal, batting at 8, struck a half century to lift her side to 247. Such a total proved far too much for K/NS, who fell 200 runs short as their batting struggled. Here’s hoping they’ll gain some confidence soon and we’ll see closer results as the season progresses!
SCORECARD
Takapuna 99/2 (Kate Irwin 48*) beat Suburbs New Lynn 95/9 by 8 wickets
ONEWA DOMAIN | At their home ground of Onewa Domain, Takapuna made short work of newbies Suburbs New Lynn. Batting first, the visitors struggled to gain any momentum against the tight Taka bowling, struggling to 95/9 after 40 overs with Leah (3/3 off 6) and Emily Watton (3/15 off 6) sisters making life very tough for the batters. Takapuna gunned down the total in 15.5 overs thanks to HEARTS allrounder Kate Irwin, who smacked 48 unbeaten runs off 47 balls. Takapuna now sit in a tie for second spot on the table with Cornwall and Parnell.
SCORECARD

CORNWALL PARK | In a similar result at Cornwall Park, the home side completed a demolition job on Papatoetoe by 7 wickets. The match was dominated by one superb individual performance as Issy O’Connell tore through the PCC bowlers, picking up 7/14 off 7 overs. Despite the loss of some early wickets as Papatoetoe started with a roar, Claire Crooks (28*) and extras (29) had the final say, gunning down the total in 9.1 overs.
