CITYGUARD Premier Men – Hedley Howarth Two Day Competition

Auckland University 128/9 trail Parnell 160 (Nick Stobart 4/50) by 32 runs

Ball dominated bat out at East Auckland with Auckland University castling Parnell for 160 before finding themselves in a spot of bother at 128/9 by close of play. Winning the toss and wisely selecting to bowl, Uni found regular breakthroughs despite a watchful start from the Parnell top order. Parnell’s batters weren’t able to form partnerships until Nikith Perera (40) and Ollie Pringle (28) combined for an 8th wicket partnership of 62. Captain Nick Stobart (4/50), Caleb Jasmat (3/37) and Angus Olliver (3/42) took all 10 wickets between them. In reply, Auckland Uni struggled to get going with all of the Uni bowlers enjoying the surface and creating breakthroughs. They’ll resume next week with the final pair at the crease, still 32 runs in arrears.

Takapuna 216/3 (Tristan Van Ingen-Kal 84*, Guy Harley 80) lead North Shore 145 (Mike Sclanders 4/22, Ross ter Braak 4/35) by 71 runs

At Onewa Doman, the defending Hedley Howarth champion North Shore side got off to a rocky start against a fired up Takapuna team. Winning the toss, Taka sent Shore in under sunny skies and found immediate reward with their powerful pace lineup. The left-arm swing of Ross ter Braak and the medium pace of Mike Sclanders proved too much for North Shore as they grabbed four wickets apiece in a total of 145. Clearly keen to secure first innings points before next week’s game (the 2022/23 season’s weather taught many lessons in tactical batting), Taka knocked off the target and carried on to 216/3 before the end of play. Tristan van Ingen-Kal (84*) and Guy Harley (80) were the top scorers.

Cornwall 43/1 trail Eden Roskill 370/7 (Kanav Gamghir 127, Neil Patel 79*, Aman Bhardwaj 61) by 327 runs

It was one way traffic at Keith Hay Park as Eden Roskill batted themselves into an insurmountable position against Cornwall. Roskill’s batters had no trouble dealing to Cornwall’s stacked bowling lineup, clubbing 370/7 before declaring. Kanav Gambhir hit their first century of the season with a brutal 127 off 121, supported ably by Aman Bhardwaj (61) and Neil Patel (79*). Cornwall navigated a tricky period of play before stumps, losing only Jack Cassidy for 23 and will resume next week at 43/1, still 327 runs behind and likely needing to bat for the entire day to nab first innings points.

East Coast Bays 272/5 (Cole Briggs 102, Ryan Schierhout 70) lead Suburbs New Lynn 175 (Tejas Patel 53, Kyle Kieser 5/43)

Back on the North Shore, it was a great day for milestones as East Coast Bays marked their return to the Hedley Howarth competition with a dominating display against Suburbs New Lynn. Kyle Keiser nabbed their first five wicket bag of the season as Suburbs were bowled out for 175 after being sent in by Ryan Schierhout. Cole Briggs then blasted their first ton with a run-a-ball 102, with good support from the captain and middle order. If rain arrives next Saturday then Bays will be safe in the knowledge that they’ve secured first innings points. If it doesn’t, they’re in an ideal position to push for an outright win.

Grafton 271/4 (Jeremy Houghton 93*, Taine Bayly 84*, Sineth Gunawardene 51) lead Papatoetoe 99 (Nikheil Bhana 5/25) by 172 runs

Down at Papatoetoe Recreation Ground, Grafton got off to the best possible start to the season with a domineering display over the home team. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Papatoetoe were blown apart by Nikheil Bhana’s 5/25, with only Harvineet Singh’s 46 off 34 offering any resistance as they folded for 99. Grafton then found themselves in a spot of trouble at 50/3 before an unbeaten 173 run partnership between Houghton (93*) and Bayly (84*) carried them through to stumps at 271/4, 172 runs ahead. Next week they may look to get their two batters through to three figures, or have a look at the skies and consider an early declaration, such is their dominant position in this game.

Howick Pakuranga 346/3 (Lachlan Stackpole 167*, Andy Morrison 69*, David Winn 65) lead Kumeu 139 by 207 runs

Howick Pakuranga made an early season statement with a bruising display of dominance over Kumeu at Huapai Domain. Bowling first, Howick Pak’s bowlers made regular inroads into the home side’s batting order, eventually dismissing them for 139. No Kumeu batter made it past 30 with Azharudin Lambat’s 3/19 the pick of the bowling performances. After losing an early wicket in reply, Howick Pakuranga set about their work efficiently, crossing the 139 mark with three wickets down before Lachlan Stackpole went ballistic. The 18-year old’s 169* off 92 included 12 mighty sixes and 11 fours. Andy Morrison chipped in with an unbeaten 69 of his own but was merely a spectator to most of the carnage at the other end. HPCC Prems ended the day on 346/3 off 50 overs are in a great position to push for an outright win this Saturday.

Hibiscus Coast 165 & 8/0 lead Ellerslie 167/6 dec. by 6 runs

In the only game this weekend to reach the third innings by stumps, a bowling-dominated slug out at Michaels Ave Reserve between Hibiscus Coast and Ellerslie has set itself up nicely for an intriguing final day this Saturday. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Hibiscus lost an early wicket before some decent top order partnerships saved their blushes. Unfortunately for them, the Ellerslie bowlers kept chipping away and no batter was able to surpass Umesh Ranaraja’s 37. Wickets were spread around the bowlers with Robinson (3/35) and Narsimhan (3/38) doing the bulk of the damage. Ellerslie’s batters then calmly and efficiently ticked off the runs, again without a half century, reaching 167/6 before declaring with first innings points in the bag. Batting again, Hibiscus Coast reached stumps with no fuss. Let’s hope we get to see this match play out to an exciting conclusion!

Birkenhead 25/1 trail Waitakere 303/9 dec. (Navan Lombard 81, Aman Kaundal 61, Sachin Variath 57, Anuradha Jayampathi 4/70) by 178 runs

And finally, at Te Atatu Park, Waitakere made the most of being sent in to bat by Birkenhead with some sturdy crease occupation. After a brace of early wickets, Lombard (81), Kaundal (61) and Variath (57) lifted Waitakere’s innings to 303/9 from 87 overs. Kaundal’s innings was particularly brutal at a run-a-ball with five sixes. Jayampathi was the pick of Birkenhead’s bowlers with 4/70. Facing a tough period of play before stumps, Birkenhead avoided a collapse, losing one wicket for 25 runs.

Premier Women – Prichard Cup

Auckland University 202/5 off 40 overs (Kayla van Spall 81, Naomi Matthews 61) beat Suburbs New Lynn 129 (Heather Siegers 40, Matthews 3/27) by 73 runs

A new season brings a newly rejigged Prichard Cup competition for the Women’s Premier sides. New to the new competition is Suburb’s New Lynn, who faced a baptism of fire against the Auckland University top order. Captain Naomi Matthews (61) and Kayla van Spall (81) put the SNLCC bowlers to the sword with a 155-run opening partnership. Suburbs, who are newly promoted to the comp and keenly aware of the challenges they’ll face this season, were able to hit back with a brace of wickets towards the end of the Uni innings, but chasing down 203 in 40 overs was always going to be a tough ask. In the end, they’ll be relatively satisfied that they batted to 38 overs for 129 all out. This match is a good eye-opener for the Suburbs girls and they’ll be better for the hit out when they face up to Papatoetoe next week.

Takapuna 208/8 off 40 overs (Taila Hurley 58) beat Cornwall 91 by 117 runs

Defending champions Takapuna sent out warning bells to the rest of the competition with a dominating display against Cornwall. After being sent in by Cornwall, who were only able to field 9 players, Taka made the most of the extra gaps in the field with contributions all down the batting order, but especially from captain Hurley (58) as they helped themselves to 208/8 from their 40 overs. Cornwall, suffering from lack of availability from a usually stacked batting lineup, never got going in their chase, falling to 91 all out. Wickets were shared around with Emily Watton (3/16) standing out as the pick of the bowlers.

Parnell 129/3 (Isabel Mills 43*, Gemma Lord 42*) beat Howick Pakuranga 128/7 off 40 overs (Neena Woollaston 50*)

In another one sided match, this time out at Lloyd Elsmore Park, Parnell drew first blood again Howick Pakuranga. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Howick Pak batted out their 40 overs to reach 128/7, but were never able to get ahead of the miserly Parnell bowlers, led by Cecilia Beck’s 2/14 off 6 overs. Neena Woollaston hit an unbeaten 50 but HPCC lacked the lower impetus needed to push their total up near 200 and really challenge the Parnell batters. As such, Parnell had no issue with the chase, gunning down the total in 24 overs, Mills and Lord top scoring with 43* and 42* respectively.

Papatoetoe 112 (Jessica Tully 3/9) beat Kumeu/North Shore 51 (Dayle Anderson 7/7) by 61 runs

Ball dominated bat at Te Atatu Park as the brand new Kumeu/North Shore team found the going tough against Papatoetoe. Winning the toss and electing to bowl, KCC/NSCC found immediate reward as their bowlers, particularly Jessica Tully (3/9) picked up regular wickets. Papatoetoe, largely through the efforts of Dayle Anderson (23) and the lower order, lifted themselves into three figures, ending on 112 from 31 overs. Anderson carried on her form by ripping through Kumeu/North Shore, claiming 7/7 from 7 overs to castle the opposition for 51 and complete a 61-run win for Papatoetoe.
