U17 Boys fight hard to finish 2nd-equal in Lincoln

Auckland Under 17 Men at the National Men’s Under 19 Tournament | Lincoln | 17-23 January 2023

Late last year the Winger Men’s Under-17 District Tournament proved to be an absolutely brilliant week of cricket for our young up-and-coming men’s cricketers. There were several teams in the mix to win the competition and it was no surprise that the Cricket Express Auckland Under-17 team ended up with a potent mix of players from all over the region in its squad.

At the National Men’s U17 Tournament last week, the team stacked up nicely against the other Major Associations at ended in a perfectly respectable tie for 2nd with Wellington. Northern Districts were the overall winners after flying through the competion unbeaten.

Led ably by Tom Jones, who finished fourth on the batting aggregate with 291 runs, the U19 Men won three out of their five one day matches but faded slightly thereafter, losing their final two one dayers and their only T20 match. Cambell Brighouse ended as the tournament’s highest run scorer with a mammoth 350 runs at 58.3.

A number of different players got their turn to shine and the standout performers were spread all over the squad.

Tom Jones hit one of the five overall centuries during the competition and Brighouse will consider himself a little unlucky to be dismissed twice in the 90s.

The bowlers were consistent without lighting the tournament on fire, with Asher Suri ending as Auckland’s top wicket taker with 9 wickets at an average of 18.9, 8th overall in the competition. Sixton, Sanjay, Birch and Douglas also chipped in with regular strikes in a high scoring competition.
