Hearts ready to tackle Burger King Super Smash

The Auckland Hearts kick off their Burger King Super Smash campaign on Thursday 25 October with the aim of going one better than their second-place finish last season.

Captain Maddy Green will lead a power-packed Hearts squad for the initial five rounds of matches in Lincoln. The squad boasts six current or former White Ferns, with Sara McGlashan rejoining the Hearts after a cameo appearance at the end of last year’s campaign.

The Hearts finished second in the T20 competition last season and were undone by a couple of results in the Lincoln round, so the team knows just how important the next four days are.

Coach Dean Flyger believes a key to the Hearts’ success will be in their mental take on the game.

“A T20 match can change very quickly, so we will need to be able to change what we do on the fly,” he says.

“If we can adapt quicker to what’s happening in those 40 overs than the other team I think we can play in the way we want to for more of the game.”

Last week the Hearts went on a pre-season trip to Brisbane, where they split victories with the Queensland Fire.

Over two days they played a one-day game and two T20s.

Flyger says that was ideal going into the start of the New Zealand domestic season.

“The Queensland experience was great – really good environment and quality opposition,” he says.

“With five rounds in a short space of time you really have to hit the ground running in this competition, so having that prep leading into it has been ideal.”

“There’s no time for brooding. We have to maintain standards through the games and to put each one behind us once it’s done.”
