Rivalry set to heat up in T20s

After last week’s opening round of T20 cricket, there are some scores to settle. Auckland Cricket will be livestreaming the match of the round from Papatoetoe Rec.

Papatoetoe is hosting Howick Pakuranga, in a match that Papatoetoe off-spinner Navdeep Aujla says is always a good battle.

“There is certainly a lot of banter around whenever we play Howick,” he says.

“A lot of the older guys from both clubs come along, and since players move from one club to another quite a lot, we know each other pretty well.”

Howick Pakuranga captain Bill Walsh agrees.

“We always have good battles with Pap, they come at us pretty hard.”

Both teams had success in round one, Howick Pakuranga defeated Ellerslie after being bowled out, and Papatoetoe beat Auckland University on the last ball.

Walsh believes the team has learned from last week.

“We got a bit of a fright against Ellerslie, but that’s something about T20, on the day anyone can be a matchwinner.”

“The team is in a good run of form, and in a tight game it can be just one player that makes the difference – one big score or tight spell of bowling.”

Aujla has similar feelings about Papatoetoe’s first round match.

“It was a bit too close for our liking,” he says, “But we knew if we could stay close then we would be able to take the chance.”

“At the end it was just hit and run to get the win.”

He says it’s a good feeling facing their rivals at home.

“We know our ground, and we can make the most of that if we use our smarts.”

Walsh says that although the team has some absences with Auckland A playing in Taupo, he’s not worried about depth.

“We’ve got a big squad, and there are plenty of guys in prem reserve pushing for a crack.”

The match will be livestreamed on Auckland Cricket’s YouTube channel from 5:30pm tomorrow, including commentary.
