Men’s Premier T20 Competition – Round 1
After a downpour yesterday, day the match between Grafton and Cornwall moved from Victoria Park to Cornwall Park, and with some shuffling between pitches every match was played in a surprisingly golden evening.
Grafton took the move away from Vic Park in stride, starting with two quick wickets, and then putting the squeeze on Cornwall.
Carl de Beer dismissed Fanie de Villiers for 0, after five balls without scoring.
Teja Nidamanuru was run out in the second over which compounded Cornwall’s misery, before Evan Jones went for two off six.
From there, Cornwall worked to consolidate, with Amit and Aditya Dhadwal in the middle. Neither of the brothers could put pressure on the runrate, however. When Amit was stumped for 16 four balls before Aditya was caught out for 11, Cornwall were halfway through their innings and their wickets for just 35.
Sam Anderson came in to make a run-a-ball 31, and together with Lucas Dasent (11) managed to help Cornwall to the end of the 20 overs. The team finished on 91/9.
Grafton went out to bat with the determination to not wait around. Openers Jack Parsons and Olly Westbury reached 52 off 7 overs before Parsons was bowled by Ajit Rajijumar for 23. Rajijumar then was on a hattrick after Mike Ruffell came and went the next ball.
Grafton’s scoring rate slowed considerably when the light began to fade and the cold to set in. Westbury was caught for 46 off the bowling of Matt Quinn, and with the score then 80/4 there wasn’t much doubt as to the result. Cornwall did well to push Grafton to 17.1 overs, when tey reached victory by 6 wickets.
Around the grounds, East Coast Bays reached 114/8 in their 20 overs, but couldn’t hold off North Shore who won by 3 wickets.
Ramesh Lakmal made 61 off 47 balls for Hibiscus Coast as they scored 142/8. Rob Sehmi then put on 58*, including three 6s, as Takapuna chased the score down with eight wickets and five overs to spare.
Birkenhead reached 192/2, including 77* off 34 from Akash Christian and 55* off 44 from Chamal Rajapaskha. Waitakere came up 13 runs short.
