COVID-19 Update | All Cricket Cancelled

Praneel HiraClub Cricket

Following the first person-to-person transmission of Covid-19 overnight, the medical advice around the potential risk for community sport is now considerably higher. Consequently, Auckland Cricket have taken the decision to cancel all cricket for the remainder of the 2019/20 season.

We understand the disappointment and inconvenience that this might cause but our first priority at the moment is the health and wellbeing of the cricket, and wider, community. We do not want to put anyone at risk in what is a rapidly evolving and unique situation.

We have taken this decision as early as possible, to give clubs more time to react and communicate to members. This is a cancellation happening across the country, led by NZC the MA’s and DA’s. You will shortly see a message from NZC to this effect.

Why has this decision been made?

Based on expert advice from New Zealand Cricket’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Martin Swan and recent government information we want to ensure that cricket is acting to pre-emptively suppress the spread of coronavirus.

While cricket is a non-contact sport there are considerable measures that need to be in place to adhere to expert advice around reducing the risk of spreading the virus. Our focus specifically is on minimising the risk and impact on the cricket community and ensuring health and well-being is our highest priority.

What is cancelled?

All Auckland Cricket administered competitions.

How will champions be determined?

Over the next few days, we will work through how we determine finishing competitions. We will keep communicating through this process and reasoning around it.

What about non-ACA administered competitions?

We strongly recommend that clubs and other cricket organisations cancel all competitions.

What about end of season events?

Our advice is that clubs cancel or postpone all end of season events / prizegivings, and make arrangements to recognise achievements at a later date.
