Auckland Premier Cricket Short Report – 7 October
Jeff Crowe Cup – Round One
Auckland’s Premier club cricket got underway in sensational fashion today, all seven games of the Jeff Crowe Cup completed under overcast skies, throwing up some juicy round one results.
Over at Vauxhall Road, North Shore hosted Suburbs New Lynn, a huge 152* from Michael Barry headlining a dominant Suburbs win.
The visitors were asked to bat first, Barry along with Jonny Bassett-Graham opened up and the pair wasted little time finding the fence.
Bassett-Graham departed for 28 leaving Barry (152*) and Raj Majithia (62) to plunder the home attack to all parts of Vauxhall Road.
The pair shared in a 138-run partnership for the second wicket, Barry’s century including 11 fours and six sixes, one bomb picking up a few air miles as it sailed over the pavilion roof with ease.
Mitchell Murray joined Barry at the tail end of the innings to add some valuable late runs and ensure the total edged past 300, Barry carrying his bat as the visitors posted 308/5.
If the batting was impressive, Suburb’s bowling was equally on point, Eli Meenhorst claiming 5/26 including the prized wicket of Graeme Beghin at the top of the order.
Ronnie Hira (34) showed some resistance with the blade for the home side, his cameo including five boundaries and a six before that man Barry accounted for his wicket.
With North Shore teetering at 74/7 Meenhorst returned to mop up the tail; 5/26 a superb haul on debut for the young quick.
A complete performance from Suburbs New Lynn sending a message to the rest in the opening round of the Jeff Crowe Cup.
In the day’s other results, Howick Pakuranga bowled Birkenhead out for 93, Matt McEwan taking 3/19, Howick getting the runs for the loss of one wicket.
Grafton equalled their best ever win against last year’s champions Takapuna, bowling them out for 133 before half centuries from Will Martin (50) and Sachin Variath (68) saw Grafton home by eight wickets.

Finally, Cornwall were made to work for their three-wicket victory over Waitakere, Cornwall’s Matt Gibson claiming four wickets on debut for the club.
