Auckland Cricket Short Report – 2 December

Hedley Howarth/Tom Hellaby

It was a genuine summer stunner across the Auckland region as the Hedley Howarth and Tom Hellaby competitions headed into Round Five.

Down at Shore Road, Parnell hosted Grafton with Dave Goddard winning the toss and promptly deciding to have a bat.

There was some early success for the visiting bowlers, knocking the top off Parnell to reduce them to 55/3 after 20 overs.

But the early wickets brought Andy Lane and Brad Rodden together and the pair quickly went about steadying things for the home side.

Lane played with patience, dispatching the bad ball to the fence in an excellent 47, his partner in crime Rodden kicking on in the afternoon sun.

Rodden hit 14 boundaries and four sixes in a superb 134 manipulating the Grafton fielders as the home side built an imposing first innings total.

James Bevin (43) was another who batted around Rodden as Parnell looked to up the ante in the final couple of hours.

Eventually they were bowled out for 339, giving them a crack at the Grafton openers before the close of play.

Josh Fisher got the wicket the home side were hoping for knocking over Will Martin in the last over of the day to leave Grafton 29/1 at stumps.

In the day’s other action, Cornwall put on 346/9 against Howick Pakuranga with a century to Brain Barnard.

University were rolled for 159 by Takapuna but then turned things right around knocking over the home side for only 100 to claim first innings points.

East Coast Bays had a good day at home claiming first innings points on day one over Papatoetoe.

In the Tom Hellaby, Michael Barry dominated with bat and ball along with a century from Victor Davies as Suburbs New Lynn took it to Birkenhead.

Waitakere put on 246 but the North Shore batsmen are in control of the chase finishing 162/1 at stumps.

Finally, Eden Roskill have already claimed first innings points against Ellerslie, Raja Sandhu picking up five with the ball and 69 with the bat.
