‘Gup Cup’ inspiring new breed of T20 cricketers
One of Auckland Cricket’s favourite sons has been honoured with the creation of a new District Twenty20 trophy.
The ‘Martin Guptill Cup’ will be contested between Auckland’s five Districts – Harbour, Western, Central, Eastern and Manukau.
The new cup reflects the changing face of cricket both domestically and globally and is the first time T20 cricket has been played at District level.
“It’s an honour to have any sort of award carry your name. As a proud Auckland cricketer I’m stoked to have an extra attachment to District T20 cricket in the region,” says Guptill.
Community Cricket Manager Tony Naidu says Auckland Cricket are listening to the type of cricket kids want to play, allowing age-group players to emulate their heroes in the shortest form of the game.
“We’ve never done District T20 tournaments before so it’s an exciting step forward for us as an Association,” says Naidu.
“The Martin Guptill Cup is about developing consistency across all Districts in both boys and girls cricket and it’s exciting to have someone as iconic as Guppy on board,” he says.
Look out for all the excitement of T20 District cricket this summer as teams vie to be the first engraved on ‘The ‘Gup Cup’.
