Aces dominate Stags at Pukekura Park

The Auckland Aces have started their Ford Trophy campaign with a bang; completing a five wicket win over the Central Stags at Pukekura Park today.

After losing the toss and being asked to bowl first, the Aces bowlers were up to the task, knocking over the home side within 45 overs for just 224.

Tom Bruce was the only Stag to reach a half century as each bowler contributed in some way to either removing or restricting Central’s batting line up.

Leg spinner Tarun Nethula made his presence felt after returning from injury taking 4-64 from his 10 overs while Matt McEwan and Mark Chapman both chimed in with two wickets a piece.

Aces openers Michael Guptill-Bunce and Colin Munro put on 36 for the first wicket, before the rest of the top order backed up the bowling effort.

A string of partnerships through the middle overs made the chase manageable for the Aces, Munro got 39 at the top, Glenn Phillips 48 at number three and the captain Craig Cachopa 35.

In a well-timed chase, it was Robbie O’Donnell (40*) and Ben Horne (23*) who brought it home for the visitors in the 42nd over.

The Aces sit at the top of the Ford Trophy standings after the first round and will be keen to continue their winning ways when they meet Canterbury at Eden Park Outer Oval this Wednesday.
