U15 girls win Cricket Express Nationals
12 January 2017
Central Districts 39 all out (Saffron Wilson 12, Zara Smith 3/14, Emily Thurman 2/0, Emma Irwin 2/0, Lexy Bassett 2/11) lost to Auckland 40/3 (Sam Petherick 13*, Cate Pederson 3/5) by 7 wickets
Auckland have claimed the national title with a resounding win over the defending champions.
The Auckland attack proved yesterday morning’s efforts against CD’s in form batters was no fluke, taking all 10 wickets for just 39 runs. This time it was Zara Smith leading the charge with figures of 3/14 from her 4 overs. Emily Thurman (2/0), Emma Irwin (2/0) and Lexy Bassett (2/11) also contributed with two wickets a piece.
It would have taken something remarkable to deny this Auckland side. Cate Pederson (3/5), the tournament’s top wicket taker, produced an excellent spell but no other bowlers were able to take any wickets. Sam Petherick (13*) inevitably scored the winning runs to seal the final with Auckland three down.
Auckland have now won the U21 and U15 girls national tournaments during the 2016/17 season. The amount of talent coming from these squads is bound to have the selectors of the Auckland Hearts excited for the future.
