Strong mix of youth and experience for Hearts
After returning from their recent trip to Brisbane, the Auckland Hearts have named a 13-strong squad for the start of the season.
Maddy Green will lead the side which features a couple of new faces – Maia Bouchier comes from the UK and Emma Fulbrook joins from the Wellington Blaze. Georgia Guy also returns to the side after taking some time off.
“Maia comes from the Middlesex Women’s side and along with Emma [Fulbrook] has fitted in well to the environment,” says Hearts Coach Dean Flyger.
“Georgia’s a good sort and adds a bit of experience. We’ve lost a couple from last year but it’s a new beginning for us and hopefully we have a good season,” he says.
After a strong winter training programme, Flyger says the “door is always open” for those in the wider squad, noting the high level of competition and quality of training the group has been experiencing.
“There’s opportunities for other girls to play their way in with strong performances in club cricket.
“We were positive last year and we want to continue that this year, positive, aggressive cricket, with bat and ball,” he says.
The squad selection comes on the back of a pre-season trip to Brisbane for the Hearts.
Fifteen wider squad players played the Queensland Fire in a in a couple of limited overs fixtures in which the hosts came out on top.
Highlights included training at the Allan Border Oval and Australian Cricket Centre with the squad gaining valuable playing time and experience.
The Hearts start their domestic season on the 24th November against the Otago Sparks at Melville Park, 4pm.
