Parity between bat and ball was somewhat restored on an overcast day in the Honda Financial Premiership. While bowlers across Auckland found the conditions more to their liking, Michael Ruffell, Bill Walsh and Jared Challis all batted brilliantly to steer sizeable chases for their respective clubs.

In the Prichard Cup, Cornwall’s Breezy Illing’s 7-for lead the bowlers, while Katie Gurrey and Anna Peterson both scored hundreds, combining for a 257-run opening stand for Auckland University.

Grafton vs. Eden Roskill – Victoria Park

Resuming at 119/3, Grafton’s Michael Ruffell and Nathan Fletcher continued to keep the Eden Roskill attack at bay. The pair had added 51 at the end of Day One and ended five runs short of Grafton’s all-time fourth-wicket record of 165, set in 1924-25.

Ruffell (108), playing in his 91st match, was patient hitting 11 fours on his way to his first Premier ton. When Fletcher was caught on 86, Grafton were cruising towards a first-innings lead. Harjot Johal, however, hadn’t given up hope taking the wickets of both set batsmen. Two others followed and Grafton still required 13 runs to take a lead. Jack Dymond and Ryan Phizackerley held their nerve and did the rest.

Grafton batted through to 307/9 before the declaration came. Mujji Mujtaba (51) and Vamshi Puppala (42) played positively before Carl de Beer (4-58) halted Eden Roskill’s progress. Eden Roskill would eventually set the hosts 162 to win from 17 overs.

Sachin Variath and Harrison Ward raced out to 50 inside five overs. The boundaries continued to be peppered when Fletcher arrived at the crease, with the in-form batsman plundering 3 sixes from his first six balls.

Harrison Ward’s blitz came to an end on 47 with the chase in the comfortable hands of first innings heroes. Fletcher (65*) hit a 22-ball fifty to make it all a relatively simple finish for the Lions, winning by eight wickets with an over to spare.
