The Auckland U21 wome’s side fly to Christchurch tomorrow in search of their fifth consecutive National Championship.
Dean Flyger is coach of the side while Auckland Hearts captain Victoria Lind is team manager. Earlier today we caught up with Lind, who is also doubling as assistant coach, to find out how the squad is shaping up: “They are looking really good and all the players seem to be in good form.
“We have’t had much chance to train as a group because of Hearts commitments and the weather has’t been great, but we are certainly ready for the tournament to start on Thursday.”
The squad has it’s final training session tonight before they depart for Christchurch at midday tomorrow ahead of their first game against Central Districts. Auckland will be without last year’s skipper Maddy Green for the this tournament but Lind still believes her side will be the team to beat: “Maddy played for the White Ferns earlier this year which makes her ineligible for the U21’s however we certainly still have the ability and it is definitely our goal to win the championship again.”
Lind has overseen the Hearts success this season as her side have dominated the domestic one-day competition with six wins from six matches and she is hoping that the senior squad success will carry over to the U21 team: “We have several girls involved in both squads and it is great that so many of those players are in form this season.
“We also have two girls who have yet to play for the Hearts this year in Sarah Carnachan and Alex Eastwood who could shine at this tournament. Sarah is the new U21’s captain and Alex has the potential to dominate the competition with the bat.”
The tournament begins with four one-day matches before three T20 games will round out the event. For Auckland to retain their title they must finish on top of the ladder after all seven matches are complete.
