FINAL | Western 177 (D Patel 51) lost to Eastern 179/9 (J Oliver 52) by one wicket.

Eastern won their third Bettr District Tournament of 2020/21 with a thrilling one-wicket win over Western.

After winning the toss and batting first, Western skipper Druv Patel (51) and Zac Lorimer (24) set a solid foundation, adding 82 for the second wicket. Both set batsmen, however, were dismissed with the score on 84 and Eastern were able to work their way back into the contest. Regular wickets helped contain any late onslaught and Western finished with 177 all out with a ball left in the 50th over.

In reply, Eastern were in significant trouble early on. Western were buzzing in the field and, with Eastern at 63/6, well on top of the game until a 70-run stand between Josh Oliver (52) and Callum Murray (23) slowly but surely edged Eastern towards their target. There were still a couple of twists and turns left yet and Western weren’t ready to lie down. Three further wickets left Eastern’s final pair needing 15 runs; a string of singles saw Brendan Meyer (27*) and Shaan Vaidya chip away at the target. In the 49th over, Meyer finally pierced a gap in the field to find four and claim a memorable win.

Central 172/8 (A Nigudkar 38, L Chandulal 30, M Harrison-Tubb 3-16) lost to Waitemata 173/3 (H Amaral 76*, K Wallace 39*, M Clarke 39) by seven wickets.

Manukau 100 lost to Tuaraki 101/2 (R Langford 37) by eight wickets.
