The Auckland Under-18 Girls’ team got their campaign underway in Wellington yesterday after day one on Monday was abandoned due to overnight rain.
Auckland are defending national champions, having won last years T20 and limited-overs sections.
Yesterday they faced Otago in a T20 match at Ben Burn Park. They chose to bowl first in challenging conditions – strong southerly winds buffeting the ground.
Auckland contained Otago to 84/6 from their 20 overs though a bowling. Skye Bowden picked up 3-10 and Marama Downs took 1-9 from four overs. The fielding effort was solid and contributed to Otago never really getting a solid partnership underway.
In return Auckland started positively, despite losing both openers in the first six overs. Bowden again starred, sending the Otago bowlers to the boundary. Her 26* from 15 along with Sam Petherick (11*) put on a 51 run stand to push Auckland to an eight-wicket win.
Auckland plays Central Districts this morning, and Northern Districts in the afternoon.
