Hearts make it 2 out of 3!

Auckland Hearts vs Northern Spirit

After an agonisingly 2 run loss against the Wellington Blaze, the Auckland Hearts were looking to bounce back against the Northern Spirit who also went one from two yesterday.

The Northern Spirit won the toss and elected to bat with the sun shining down on the Lincoln grounds. Led by openers Katie Gurrey (57 off 48 balls) and Samantha Curtis (60* off 49 balls), the Spirit put up an imposing total of 158 from their 20 overs. Gurrey was the quicker starter, putting pressure on the Hearts bowlers with a succession of early boundaries, and in the theme of the day, it was a run out that finally ended the 88 run opening stand. As Gurrey departed, Curtis took over the aggressor role and with the middle order given a license to hit, the Northern Spirit finished with several big overs. Emma Fulbrook (1/30 off 3 overs) finished up as the only bowler of the day with a wicket, with all other dismissals being run outs.

Due to an injury to Lauren Down, new Hearts opening pair of Anna Peterson and Tahlia Wilson needed to come out firing in the chase and that they did bringing up the 50 without loss in the 6th over. As the chase gathered momentum, Peterson passed 50 and the partnership rolled over 100 in the 13th over. The Hearts continued to push the pace between the wickets and this led to the downfall of first Wilson who was run out for 44 off 38 balls, and soon afterwards Peterson for a superb 65 off 48 balls. In between the run outs, the running between the wickets was having its effect of the Spirit fielders. Ones were often turned into twos and as Sara McGlashan (25* off 17 balls) picked up from where the openers left off, the Hearts entered the final two overs needing 10 to win.

Those 10 were achieved in style thanks to a lovely cameo from Maddy Green (24* off 9 balls) who finished things off with three successive boundaries for the Hearts to win by 8 wickets and 8 balls to spare.
