Auckland Grammar are the latest New Zealand Community Trust Junior Boys’ champions after a thrilling one wicket win over Christchurch Boys’ High School in the final at Owen Delany Park in Taupo.
After going through the round robin phase unbeaten Auckland Grammar faced off against Christchurch Boys High School in the final of this competition for Year 9 and 10 boys played in Taupo.
Auckland Grammar’s success carries on from King’s College success at the same tournament last year.
The final itself was a low scoring affair but not lacking in drama as Auckland Grammar went down to the final pair to nab the victory.
Christchurch Boys High School 136-9 (Taylor 40 no, Black 3-28) lost to Auckland Grammar School 137-9 (Mitch Ross 4-11) by 1 wicket
In a low scoring but tense match Christchurch battled through to 136 for nine, largely thanks to a ninth wicket partnership between Tom Taylor and Matthew Long. Auckland struggled in reply with tight and accurate bowling by the Christchurch bowlers keeping them to 70 for eight. Two late partnerships between Burkin and Isuru Gamage and then Burkin and Michael Black wrestled the match back in Auckland’s favour to seal a one wicket win with just four balls to spare.
