U17s make strong start to National Tournament

The Auckland Under 17’s are off to a winning start at National Tournament with decisive victories over Otago and Canterbury.

Will O’Rourke was the star of the show with the ball against Otago taking 5-15 with support from Lucas Dasent (3-21) and Nikith Perera (2-27).

Opener Conor Ansell (45*) and number three Jock McKenzie (56*) made light work of a small total ensuring the Aucks got home in under 20 overs for just one wicket down.

The Aucklanders then went two from two today with a four-wicket victory over Canterbury.

It was a tougher day at the office for the Auckland bowlers with the Cantabs posting 252/9 from their 50 overs with O’Rourke, Perera and McKenzie all taking two wickets.

The batting group really stood up for their side in the chase lead by a sensational century from Ansell (108*).

Ansell anchored the innings showing maturity well beyond his years, striking at a touch under 100.

He hit 10 fours in the knock and again had strong support from McKenzie (70), the pair putting on 153 for the second wicket.

A little stumble in the middle didn’t hurt the Aucklanders chances with Ansell and Sajith Dhambagolla (21*) guiding their side to victory.

Auckland now have a day off before they face Central Districts U17 on Tuesday.
