Hearts squeeze Central in T20
The Auckland Hearts have produced a magnificent effort with the ball to claim a 16-run victory in their Twenty20 match this afternoon against the Central Hinds in Palmerston North.
The Hearts bowlers executed a brilliant second innings ‘squeeze’ on the home side’s batting lineup defending a modest 112/6.
Both WHITEFERN Holly Huddleston and Bella Armstrong picked up two wickets a piece while Arlene Kelly and Roz McNeil chipped in with a wicket each.
However, it was the efforts of WHITEFERN Anna Peterson who really swung the game in the Aucklanders favour, her figures of 3-14 from four overs were a true show of class as she removed the dangerous Central middle order.
As the game wore on, Auckland’s total started to get a bit big on the home side, a runout in the final over personifying Central’s desperation and the Hearts’ fight.
Earlier, asked to bat first the Hearts were in trouble early with none of the top five reaching double figures.
At 14/5 Huddleston and Kelly came together and went about resurrecting the innings for the visitors.
Huddleston (55*) and Kelly (30) put on 90 runs for the sixth wicket both managing to go at a tick under a run-a-ball in clearly tough circumstances.
Huddleston in particular showed her power in finding the fence five times in her half century while Kelly was proved to be an excellent foil for her more senior teammate.
Their partnership was broken in the final over with the Hearts posting 112/6 from their 20 overs before the bowlers took over to carry Auckland to a memorable win to start their weekend of domestic cricket.
