Hearts extinguish Sparks in T20

A mixture of youth and experience has led the Auckland Hearts to an eight wicket win over the Otago Sparks in their T20 match at Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln.

The Sparks won the toss and elected to bat first and while Arlene Kelly (1-25) struck early for the Hearts, Katey Martin (67), Suzie Bates (16) and Leigh Kasperek (31) went about putting runs on the board.

However, a double strike from youngster Bella Armstrong (2-35) in the 13th over swung the momentum back in the Hearts’ favour.

Armstrong removed both Bates and Martin in a fine display of bowling.

Roz McNeil chipped in late with a wicket as the Sparks posted 147/4 from their 20 overs, setting up an enticing chase for the Aucklanders.

The Hearts’ reply started in the worst possible way losing run machine Lauren Down on the very first ball of the innings.

However, experienced heads Anna Peterson (42) and Sara McGlashan (56*) came together and promptly took the game by the scruff of the neck.

The pair batted superbly in partnership, Peterson taking on the boundary while McGlashan dropped anchor and worked singles.

When Peterson departed in the 10th over, Captain Maddy Green (36*) joined McGlashan and there was no looking back for the Hearts.

Green continued her superb form with the blade going at over a run-a-ball to see her side home along with McGlashan in the 19th over.

A superbly timed chase and a brilliant start to the Hearts’ shot at the T20 crown.
