Auckland A were unable to defend against Northern Districts A in the first of two matches at St Paul’s in Hamilton.

Winning the toss and opting to bat, Auckland A were bolstered by strong performances from a number of their players on the way to scoring 279.

Ben Beecroft made 51, Brian Barnard reached 61, and Michael Barry scored 85 before immediately driving north to take up 12th man duties for the Auckland Aces.

Tim Southee, making his return from injury for ND A before heading to the UAE to join the BLACKCAPS took 2/49.

In reply, Northern Districts A got off to a good start, reaching 82 before the first wicket fell. From there Auckland A had their work cut out for them and were unable to make inroads into the middle order. ND A won by four wickets with three overs remaining.

The second one-day match takes place today.
