Unitak have claimed their first Pearl Dawson Trophy T20 title beating Takapuna in a dramatic bowl off at Te Atatu Park today.
After 20 overs both the Takapuna Ponies and Unitak couldn’t be separated, Taka running a single to tie the scores and sending the game to a bowl off.
In the clutch, it was Unitak Skipper Alex Eastwood who stepped up hitting the stumps twice with her two balls to effectively seal the victory for the home side.
Earlier Unitak won the toss and elected to bat first but lost opener Anna Peterson in the first over to a runout.
However, when Katie Gurrey (35) and Sam Curtis (42) came together they put a 70-run partnership together taking their team through to the 13th over.
Skipper Eastwood cleared the fence once in the latter overs as the home side posted a middling 116/6 from their 20 overs.
Takapuna’s chase got off to a solid start with Lauren Down (63) and C Wood (15) putting on 46 for the first wicket.
But some tight fielding and a comeback from the bowling unit meant the home side swung back into the contest in the second half of the Takapuna innings.
Wickets started to fall with the game on a knife edge, heading into the final over with Takapuna requiring 10 runs from it.
Holly Huddleston (3-27) started the final over with a no ball that went for six, the momentum firmly with the visitors.
However, Huddleston showed all her experience ensuring the ‘free hit’ ball was a dot before making a double strike in the following deliveries.
Takapuna managed a single off the final ball to take the game to a bowl off leaving the stage for Eastwood to lead her side to victory in what was a dramatic afternoon of cricket.
