Strong ACES squad hit the road

Batsman Mark Chapman rejoins the ACES’ 13-man squad as the Ford Trophy kicks into overdrive with three matches in five days, starting against the Wellington Firebirds on Monday in Lincoln.

The ACES take their unbeaten record on the road with matches against the Firebirds, Otago Volts and Canterbury.

Lockie Ferguson, fresh off taking a scintillating 5-38 against the Central Stags, remains with the ACES before returning to the BLACKCAPS’ test squad to prepare for the second test in Hamilton.

Paceman Kyle Jamieson, who also bowled an excellent spell on Thursday, said the ACES will look to learn and adapt as the week goes on.

“It’s a crucial week in the grand scheme of the Ford Trophy, but we can’t look too much further than the Firebirds.

The Firebirds will provide a different challenge to the side the ACES defeated by four wickets a week ago at Eden Park Outer Oval, with several representative players back in the mix for the defending champions.

“We’ll take lessons from that win and apply them to what will be a different surface and a different ground.

“For us, we’ll look to concentrate on what’s going to be effective for each game.”

The ACES and Firebirds will meet at a neutral venue as Lincoln No. 3 plays host to the two sides. Jamieson said most of the squad, if not all, will have played at the ground, so adapting to the conditions will be the key challenge.

“Neither side will know the conditions as well as we might at home, so it is about accessing the conditions early on.”

Former Australian quick and Victoria Cricket Bowling Coach Mick Lewis also joins the side for the week ahead. Lewis is excited to work with Head Coach Heinrich Malan and the wider ACES group.

“We had Sean (Solia) with us through preseason and this is a great opportunity to see how Heinrich and the ACES go about their business.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how things work in a different environment. I’m sure Heinrich will pick my brain about what we do back home in Victoria and I know I’ll be doing the same.”
