Auckland’s St Kentigern Boys School has won the ANZ Junior Cup in Palmerston North. The Remuera School went through tournament week undefeated, defeating Hereworth School in a tense final.
Hereworth School 59-6 (J Ryniker-Doull 22, H Waite 2-7) lost to St Kentigern Boys School 61-0 (O Davies 36, M Alpe 20) by eight wickets.
A wet morning in Palmerston North caused some nerves for the final round of the ANZ Junior Cup. The decision to move all games to artificial wickets with significant rain forecast would act as a leveller for the two undefeated teams looking to secure top spot.
Once underway, the St Kentigern side claimed useful wickets to dismiss Hereworth openers Angus Scott and Nicholas Robertson, who had both played well throughout the tournament.
Rain interrupted play after 7.4 overs and persistent rain looked like it would win the day. However, after two and a half hours of patience, the umpires gave the all-clear to resume with 10 over per side. Hereworth’s James Ryniker-Doull took the chance to add an extra 15 runs on the scoreboard growing the Central Districts representative’s total to 59-5.
St Kentigern’s Harry Waite was on fire yet again with the ball, taking 2-7. The Auckland side’s inning saw openers Ollie Davies (36) and Marco Alpe (20) surpassed Hereworth’s total with 3.4 overs remaining to win the match and be crowned as the winners of the ANZ Junior Cup for 2020.
