Preview – Prichard Cup | Round One

This week marks the start of the Premier Women’s 2018/19 competition with the start of the Prichard Cup. With the Hearts and White Ferns away, players will be eager to step up and put themselves in the frame for higher honours.

Defending champions Unitak – the side made up of players from Auckland University and Waitakere clubs – are heading south to play Papatoetoe. Papatoetoe were notoriously hard to beat at home last season, which will challenge Unitak to start their campaign well.

Takapuna will also be looking to make a strong start to the season against Howick Pakuranga. The Ponies were pipped in both finals last season, and there’s likely to be a few demons to banish as they blow out the cobwebs. The side will need its younger players to step up as a number of senior players are away. Howick Pakuranga are a more settled side, and will be out to show they’re a strong contender this season.

Cornwall faces off against Parnell in this round’s local derby. Cornwall is also hit particularly hard with their rep players unavailable, and this will undoubtedly give Parnell confidence that they can make a better start to this season than 2017/18. Meanwhile, Cornwall will be eager to show they have the depth in their club to take out the championship.
