Who to watch:
Dean Van Deventer – a relatively new player, the all-rounder was particularly impressive with the bat in the T20 tournament last year, with a strike rate of 177. He also had no average, as all of his innings finished not out.
It’s been all change at Parnell, but that hasn’t dampened the team’s ambitions.
“We basically have an entirely new side from a couple of seasons ago,” says Parnell coach Ian West. West himself is in his first season as coach of the “Peaches”, having moved from Grafton.
“There’s only a couple of players who’ve been around for more than two or three seasons.”
Despite this, West says the team is focused on taking all three formats as they come throughout the year.
“There’s a particular push across the whole club to improve two-day performances.”
As a new side, much of preseason has been spent working out the strengths of the team, but West is particularly enthusiastic about their batting.
“We’ve got a lot of depth there, we’ve got the ability to bat down to six, seven, eight.”
That will play well at Shore Road, but he concedes the team will have to improve their game plans for away matches.
Beyond just winning matches, West has goals to see players in contention for selection to Auckland A and the Aces.
“We want to build players to the next level. If you’ve got guys playing well enough to get selected, your team’s probably also doing pretty well.”
