Papatoetoe hosted traditional rivals Howick Pakuranga in round two of the Premier Men’s T20 Championship. The match-up always draws spectators, and the hovering clouds didn’t detract from the atmosphere around the game.
Howick Pakuranga won the toss and sent themselves in to bat, making the most of the light. They got off to a flier, Ben Barnard hitting four fours in one over off Navdeep Aujla. Along with Cameron Neale, Howick Pakuranga was propelled to 58 off 7 when Barnard was caught.
It didn’t slow them down much, however, until Neale went at the end of the 10th over. Papatoetoe’s spinners then managed to pull the game back from the Alpacas. Bill Walsh and David Winn found the scoring tougher going, and Aujla got some revenge when he was on a hattrick in the last over of his spell. Howick Pakuranga finished 20 overs at 146/5.
It was a score which was always going to be tough to reach for Papatoetoe, and tougher still when they had two of the Aces fast bowlers coming in from both ends. Danru Ferns and Jamie Brown both got wickets in their first overs, and had Papatoetoe at 17/4 three overs later.
Dilpreet Singh and Damanpreet Bhatti had the only real partnership of the Papatoetoe innings. They put on 49 runs as a pair before Rowan Naude removed them both in the 15th over. At 86/8 the game was well out of reach at that point, and for Papatoetoe it became about not letting Howick Pakuranga bowl them out. They managed it, and made it to 112/9, leaving Howick Pakuranaga the victors by 34 runs.
