The Honda Financial Premiership saw a hectic hunt for points during an afternoon that included a trio of late outright results.

Howick Pakuranga vs. Papatoetoe – Lloyd Elsmore Park

Needing 71 with three wickets in hand, Howick Pakuranga’s rearguard resistance didn’t quite last long enough as Papatoetoe secured first-innings points. After a fruitless initial spell, Harshal Vyas (5-29) returned to pick up his fifth and the final Howick Pakuranga wicket.

The hosts, however, didn’t let their deficit of 24 runs hamper aspirations of getting something out of the game, firing up with the ball and hitting back before lunch.

Josh Plummer (58) performed a dual role, holding the Papatoetoe innings together and building the visitor’s lead. Adam Jones (3-36) was again in the action, while seamers Donovan Grobbelaar, Jamie Brown and Matt McEwan all unsettled Papatoetoe’s batsmen. Papatoetoe were eventually bowled out for 161 in their second innings, setting the Alpacas 185 to win.

At 23/2, Papatoetoe sniffed an outright of their own. Howick Pakuranga’s Bill Walsh (38) then combined with Brian Barnard (44) and the pair put the chase on course. The rollercoaster fourth innings rolled on as Bhupinder Singh got both Walsh and Barnard in quick succession. By the time Howick Pakuranga needed 18 to win, Singh had taken a further two including the scalp of David Winn (37).

Jones and McEwan took their opportunity second time around to claim an important outright victory by three wickets.
