Cornwall win Pearl Dawson Trophy

Vanilla BriefClub Cricket

Cornwall’s Premier Women claimed the Pearl Dawson trophy over the weekend with a four wicket win over Waitakere.

The win not only saw them lift the cup but also remain unbeaten over the course of the Tournament with their second win over Waitakere in as many weeks.

After rolling Waitakere last weekend for 76 then cruising to a ten wicket win, Cornwall would have been keen to recreate that kind of form when they won the toss and sent Waitakere into bat. But Waitakere started strongly with Auckland Hearts players Sam Curtis and Arlene Kelly opening up with a 64 run partnership.

Even after Kelly was given out lbw on 23 Tori Higgs was able to come in and form a partnership of 61 with Curtis to push Waitakere to 125/2. Cornwall then wrested back some of the initiative as they removed Curtis for 64, which triggered a mini-collapse as Waitakere slumped to 149/5.
However the tail still had plenty of bite left in it and were able to push their way in the last 10 overs to a defendable total of 212/8.

In reply the Cornwall openers Saachi Shahiri and Sarah Carnachan started strongly, just as they had the week before, with the pair getting Cornwall to 94 before Carnachan fell for 26. However Waitakere came roaring back into the contest as Shahiri and season top run scorer Maddy Green both fell within a couple of overs of each other and were soon followed by Georgia Guy, leaving Cornwall struggling at 116/4.

Fortunately White Fern Katie Perkins then stepped up to steady Cornwall’s innings with a run-a-ball 42. She got some support from Bella Armstrong (28) as the pair got Cornwall within 20 runs of the total.

The game still had another twist though as Waitakere dismissed both Perkins and Armstrong in the space of three balls to put pressure on the Cornwall lower order.

However a composed response from Rebecca Yee and Claire Crooks saw them across the line with three overs to spare and claim the four wicket victory and the Pearl Dawson Trophy.

With the one day comps now over all eyes will turn to the final weekend of premier cricket as the Women will play the final games in the Mortgage Supply co Twenty20 competition.

Waitakere 212/8(S Curtis 64) lost to Cornwall 213/6 (S Shahiri 58, K Perkins 42; R Lilii 3-32) by four wickets.
