Eden Park groundsmen scoop domestic award
Eden Park’s groundsmen have scooped yet another award this cricket season, picking up the Domestic long form cricket pitch award for 2017/18.
Groundsman Matt Sandery says the team are proud to receive the honour after a long season on the roller.
“The boys are at the top of their game, it’s been an honour to be part of the Eden Park team to be honest,” Sandery says.
“The boys have worked pretty hard over the summer and being new to the team it’s been an eye opener coming from Australia,” he says.
“To have the interaction at a First-Class level with players and staff has been pretty special, coming from Australia you don’t get these day to day connections.”
Ian McKendry, NZC GM Grounds & Facilities, said the awards recognised the outstanding contribution from the turf management teams responsible for the preparation of cricket surfaces across all New Zealand venues.
The quality of cricket surfaces is an important part of the development and enjoyment of our players at all levels – from the community game through to the high-performance pathways of domestic and International women’s and men’s competitions.
The pitch of the year awards are based on the information and data collated from the feedback received from player surveys, match reports and ICC reports over the 2017-18 cricket season.
With cricket season done and dusted you would think the ‘groundies’ would be kicking their feet up for rugby season, however Sandery says this is far from the case!
“Not really, the boys are getting the wicket renovations happening now. It’s nice to have a bit of a shorter week hours wise but cricket season can’t come around soon enough!
