Aces to take on Hurricanes in Hobart next month

The Auckland Aces will make a trip to Tasmania next month to play two T20 matches against the Hobart Hurricanes Big Bash side.

Previous meetings between Auckland and Hobart have involved Academy teams and A sides. These two matches will for the first time be played between the 1st XIs for both the Aces and the Hurricanes.

Auckland Professional Cricket Manager Simon Insley says the relationship with Hobart has been a great success.

“The Hurricanes have helped us establish connections with other T20 teams, which has given our players the opportunity to compete in tournaments around the world.”

There has been plenty of competition between the Aces and Hurricanes since the two associations began their partnership.

The Hurricanes Academy side came to Auckland last year to play at Eden Park. Both teams played in the Abu Dhabi T20 trophy – but were in different pools.

And earlier this month, Auckland A and the Hurricanes Academy XI both competed in the Michael Hussey Cup held in Sydney.

“The growth of the relationship between Hobart and Auckland has been incredibly exciting,” says Insley.

“We see the two fixtures not just as preparation for both sides ahead of our respective T20 campaigns, but also as a celebration of the partnership between the teams.”

Aces captain Craig Cachopa says that for the team it’s exciting to be going up against players they’ve watched in the Big Bash.

“The games are a great chance to play against serious opposition before the start of the Super Smash,” he says.

Hurricanes Head Coach Adam Griffith agrees that the timing of the two games is ideal.

“These matches will be an excellent opportunity to play against high quality opposition Before the start of the BBL.”

Cachopa also believes the partnership between Auckland and Hobart offers more than just the chance to switch from four-day cricket to T20.

“For us it offers the opportunity to play outside our own little pond, which isn’t something every cricketer in NZ gets the chance to do.”

The Auckland Aces will play the Hobart Hurricanes in two T20 matches on 20 and 21 December at Blundstone Arena in Hobart.
