Auckland U15 girls defeat defending champs, remain unbeaten – Round Four
11 January 2017
Central Districts 59 all out (Jessie Hollard 12, Elizabeth Cohr 10, Amie Hucker 3/13, Marama Downes 2/7) lost to Auckland 61/5 (Emma Irwin 16, Gemma Adams 12, Emily Thurman 11, Cate Pederson 3/6) by 5 wickets
Auckland win against last year’s champions to remain undefeated.
Having to bowl to the in form Central Districts batters was a daunting prospect for Auckland. After three games CD had four players in the tournaments top 10 run scorers. However, when Amie Hucker and Marama Downes reduced CD to 14 for 5 after 6.2 overs, including the wickets of all four in form batters, things looked much brighter. CD were never able to recover being bowled out for 59 by another brilliant bowling display from the Aucklanders. Hucker again producing outstanding figures of 3/13 off 5.5 overs. Marama Downes also contributed with 2/7 off 4 overs.
Opener Emma Irwin made it her job to bat time knowing CDs only chance was to bowl out the Aucklanders quickly. Her defensive style of batting may have only produced 13 runs off 65 balls, and she fell just before the match was won, but it kept CD out of the match. Other small, but important, contributions from Emily Thurman (11) and Gemma Adams (12) secured the win. Cate Pederson bowled excellently for CD to finish with figures of 3/6 off 5.2 over, including 4 maidens.
With this win Auckland have secured a spot in the final with one round remaining. They are due to play the last round robin game this afternoon with the final taking place tomorrow morning.
