Hearts endure difficult day

The Auckland Hearts had a tough day at the office falling short against the Canterbury Magicians and the Wellington Blaze in a doubleheader at Lincoln on Friday.

In the first match against the Magicians, Maddy Green won the toss and chose to bat.

The Hearts found themselves in trouble early on losing both openers cheaply, Sara McGlashan (23) steadied the ship scoring her runs at a fast pace to bring the Hearts back into the game.

The Magicians were sublime in the field snaring five run outs to put the pressure on the Hearts.

Maia Bouchier (25) batted well with the tail, helping to lift her side to a competitive 127.

Holly Huddleston (1-19) picked up an early wicket to get the Hearts defense off to an ideal start

However, the Magicians seized the momentum putting on 90 for the second wicket to put themselves in the driver’s seat.

Anna Peterson (1-20) and Bella Armstrong (1-21) picked up a couple of quick wickets to take the game into the last over.

The Magicians held their nerve getting home with two balls to spare to secure a five-wicket victory.

In the second game of the day, the Hearts had another crack batting first against the Wellington Blaze.

The top order struggled against the Blaze bowling attack slumping to 4/35.

Katie Perkins (45) played a lone hand for the Hearts scoring her runs off just 32 balls to keep the Hearts in the game.

When Perkins was run out, the tail struggled against Wellington’s spinners collapsing to 102 all out.

The Blaze batsmen showed patience against the Hearts seamers putting on 32 for the first wicket.

Arlene Kelly (1-34) and Bella Armstrong (1-13) picked up two quick-fire wickets to leave the match evenly poised at 34/2.

The Blaze middle order took the game away from the Hearts scoring at a rapid rate to put themselves in control.

The Hearts had no answers eventually falling to a 7 wicket defeat.
