An important aspect of the Coach Development Programme is running high quality coaching courses to upskill and educate coaches on both what to coach (the 'science') and how to coach (the 'art').
New Zealand Cricket has a clear Coach Pathway which is aligned to the Player Pathway. We advise that coaches should only complete the coaching qualification that is matched to the level of cricketers they are coaching and just as players advance through the Player Pathway, so do the coaches through the Coach Pathway. The new pathway is about horizontal learning, as a result a coach may become an expert at a particular level rather than progressing up the ladder.
Details of the coaching courses run by Auckland Cricket are below. To register on a course or for more information, you can email Chris Mundell at Auckland Cricket.
Year 0-4 years.
Initial Have A Go and Kiwi courses are what we would consider the LEARN and EXPLORE stage of both Coach and Athlete development. All of this feeds into the PARTICIPATE phase.
The focus would not be on the quality of coaches but more on numbers and educating people who understand and care about young Kiwis development. The course is designed for parents, volunteers and teachers.
Key objectives in this area would be on creating awareness and the teaching of the basic skills. The course is athlete focused and the coaches are able to nurture a love of sport and physical activity in general.
These coaches are the gateway to cricket for many young cricketers and parents so it is important the introduce the concept of fair play and understand they are in the business of not only creating better young athletes but also better young people.
This course is based online where you have the freedom to complete the 6 different modules in your own time. If you wish to start your learning click HERE to be directed to New Zealand crickets online modules.
Extension Modules are run for coaches wanting more information to assist them to become more effective Fundamental Coaches.

Level 1 will be a course's run regionally between August-October with applications asked for and participants decided upon by the Coach Development Manager.
Coaches in this area should aim to nurture a love of competing and aspiring to be the best you can be. They should still focus on skill development, tactical understanding and decision making in a competitive environment. They need to understand the need of athletes and create an environment that assists their athletes to perform under pressure. They also need to encourage their athletes to develop a sense of sporting ethics.
The course is delivered in a three module format regionally based using highly qualified Coach Educators. It combines practical sessions and personal study and requires coaches to complete examinable material and 50 hours of coaching to complete.
