Auckland Cricket Game Development

Overview

Auckland Cricket's Development Programme seeks to promote and reinforce cricket's position as the country's number one summer sport, and to develop the game and players within the greater Auckland region.

As an Association which is based in the busiest, most populated and most diverse city in New Zealand, Auckland Cricket has the opportunity to show leadership, innovation, and courage to, as the NZ Cricket strategic plan says, 'push beyond boundaries' and open the game up to new markets.  We live in a society where time is a precious commodity and any leisure or recreation activities need to provide a quick fix if they are to be attractive options.  We must embrace and develop alternative formats of the game, whether they are played on indoor courts, on the beach, at the local reserve or in modified formats such as kilikiti.  The success and profile that Twenty20 has brought to the game also presents great recruitment opportunities.

At the same time we must continue to strengthen our clubs and schools to retain the traditional base of players and ensure quality support structures and coaching programs are in place to develop talented cricketers and encourage lifelong participation in the sport.

Overall, Auckland Cricket has set itself the challenging goal of having 19,000 people playing cricket in Auckland by 2012.  In the context of a current downward trend, a 20% increase in player numbers is a demanding task.  The next four years will be both testing and exciting.  Cricket is changing.  Society is changing.  One Charles Darwin said "it is not the strongest of species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change."
