The contribution that the Indian community makes to the cricketing landscape in Auckland has recently been recognised at two awards ceremonies with Aces, rep and club players nominated and taking away awards.
Bhupinder Singh was named the Cricket Player of the Year and Ish Sodhi the Under 21 Player of the Year at the Indian Newslink Indian Sports Awards back in early May. Singh picked up career best first class figures of 6-50 against the Otago Volts in the Plunket Shield on his way to 16 wickets for the season, while Sodhi is off to Australia soon to represent New Zealand at the ICC U19 World Cup.
Singh was also nominated at the Indian Community and Sports Awards at the end of May, alongside his Aces team-mate Jeet Raval and the pair ended as runners up in the Sportsman of the Year category behind former Aces player Tarun Nethula.
Sodhi picked up a second award, jointly taking out the Junior Sportsman of the Year Award in a category where the runner-up was Auckland University spinner Vedant Zaveri. Both players had impressive club seasons picking up 43 and 26 wickets respectively and proved through impressive performances with the bat that they also have great potential to be talented all-rounders in the future.
